The course is part of the MLC degree course. It consists of two modules held in the first (Module 1) and second semester (Module 2), and a year-round language practice course (“esercitazioni”) closely integrated with the modules and co-ordinated by the Professors of Module 1 and Module 2. The general aim is to consolidate the metalinguistic competences needed to describe the English language and to achieve an operational competence of B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The main focus is on providing the instruments to recognize and describe the phonemes of English, the suprasegmental phenomena of English, and the verb phrase.
The course consists of two Professor's modules (Module 1 held in the first semester by Professor Bencini and Module 2 held in the second semester by Professor Coccetta) and a year round language practice course ("esercitazioni") closely integrated with the modules and coordinated by the Professors. The general aim is to provide the student with the metalinguistic competences needed to recognise and describe some building blocks of the English language, particularly phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics.

Knowledge and understanding:
The student will gain theoretical and applied knowledge of the English language as it is used in English-speaking countries (as L1 and L2) as well as lingua franca in communicative contexts that include everyday as also academic and specialized contexts. The course will have a particular focus on the English phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics.

Communication:
The student will be able to appropriately describe the aspects of the English language covered in the two theoretical modules. In so doing, the student will demonstrate they have reached the B2 level of the CEFR.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to identify and describe some building blocks of the English language, particularly phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics, in texts in English produced for specific communicative contexts (everyday, academic and specialized contexts).

Making judgements:
The student will be able to apply what they have learnt in the theoretical modules to the phonological, morphological, syntactical and pragmatical analysis of texts in English produced for specific communicative contexts (everyday, academic and specialized contexts).

Learning skills:
The student will be able to select appropriate bibliographical sources (printed and in digital form) to enhance their knowledge on the topics studied in the Professor's modules as well as their general linguistic competence. In the following academic year, the student will take advantage of what they have learned in the English Language 1 course to study the contents of the English Language 2 course. The student will be able to self-assess their progress with respect to their metalinguistic and communicative competence in English.
B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The English Language 1 course is composed of three parts:
1. Theoretical module (Professor Giulia Bencini);
2. Theoretical module (Professor Francesca Coccetta);
3. Language practice ("esercitazioni") with the CEL (Dr. Barbara Pagotto) to develop the B2 level (written and spoken language).

Title of the theoretical module: THE ENGLISH VERB PHRASE

The theoretical module will take into account the verb phrase, specifically its structure and syntactic role in the clause. The student will observe the use of the verb phrase in texts in English produced for specific communicative contexts (everyday, academic and specialized contexts). In the "esercitazioni" with Dr. Pagotto, the student will improve their language skills in order to reach the B2 level of the CEFR.

Module 1 and Module 2 are complementary parts of English Language 1. The final exam will be written and oral and will assess the topics of the two modules. The written exam regarding Module 2 (Professor Coccetta) is a structured test assessing the student's competence in the theoretical contents covered in the Module.

The oral exam regarding Module 2 (Professor Coccetta) will assess whether the student can describe one of the topics covered in Module 2 using the proper terminology. To take the oral exam, the student is required to have successfully passed all the written exams.

For further information, please contact Professor Coccetta. (francesca.coccetta@unive.it).
Module 2 of the English Language 1 course is held with the blended modality (50% classroom lessons, 50% online lessons). Traditional teaching methods will be integrated with the use of multimedia resources and corpora, and pair and group work. During the course, the students will be provided with mock exams.
