COURSE HELD ENTIRELY IN ENGLISH. This is an intermediate-advanced course. Students will practice specialized English as related to the themes of the development and marketing of tourist products, present commercial trends and the ethics of new forms of tourism. Pertinent current events will also be discussed.General revision of grammar, listening comprehension and writing techniques will be provided, and supplemented by a "lettorato".
Students will learn to present an innovative tourist product, discuss present trends and recognize the impact of certain political and environmental events on tourism today. Academic and professional writing techniques will also be studied according to the rules for expository writing, as will be the techniques of intercultural negotiations. In this respect, an end-of-term role-play exercise on a theme chosen by participants will also be featured.
Minimum level of English required: B2 (or higher) in the CEFR.
During the course students will study texts (to be prepared before class) and video documents for comment and discussion. Among the topics to be studied are:.
Tourism and human rights, "Voluntourism" advantages and disadvantages, Disaster or "Dark" tourism, the importance of Cultural Intelligence or "CI" in intercultural negotiations, how to identify the various markets, the social classes of customers and locals, the respect of local religious and social customs of the countries visited, sustainable tourism, and others. All themes will be dealt with interactively, allowing for free comment and debate.




Material on Moodle to be downloaded and prepared for class on a weekly basis.
Continuous assessment will be an option for 50% of the final grade. This will consist in an essay of approximately 450 words written at home on a topic chosen from among those proposed and participation in a role-play exercise, the negotiation topic to be chosen by common agreement. The final exam will consist in a brief oral covering the entirety of the course.

Non-attending students will write a paper of approximately 600 words, to be discussed at the oral exam, with the addition of a "surprise" question on the rest of the course.

Orals will take place either online, or in person and in respect of the current anti-Covid norms, according to the situation at that time.

Attendance is highly recommended. This is a language course, which means that regular practice is essential. "Office hours" will be held, online or in presence, by appointment, schedule yet to be determined.
