It is part of the core classes of the early modern curriculum (Master's Degree Programme in History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage). It focuses on reception as demonstrated though the formation, display and recording of sets of artifacts.
- Awareness of the different methodological approaches to the history and theory of collections (in the broadest sense of the term) from 1908 until now.

- Familiarity with the main historical sources and research methodologies concerning early modern collections.

- Awareness of the main forms of accumulation and collection developed in the period spanning the 16th to the 18th century.

- Ability to devise hypotheses on the nature and rationale of an early modern collection.
No specific requirement for this course (a good understanding of written English is highly desirable).
Introduction to the theories and methodologies considering historical forms of collection; discussion of selected texts representing these approaches.
Familiarization with examples of inventories / literary sources and correspondence concerning early modern collections.
In-class presentations focusing on European collections (15th and 16th century).
Group educational visits or, alternatively, a few classes focusing on the earliest Kunstkammern.
The readings to be discussed in class will be shared through the platform moodle.unive.it. Inscription to the course on the moodle platform is compulsory.




The evaluation considers the students' in-class presentations and the results of the final oral exam.


The final note takes into account:

30%: the in-class presentation and participation;
70%: the final exam, which will concern the assigned readings, the topics duscussed in class, and the candidate?s in-class presentation.
Seminar focusing on the assigned readings, the students' presentations, and in-class discussion of selected sources. Further materials (sources, bibliography, links, pdf presentations) will be shared through the platform moodle (http://moodle.unive.it ).

At the moment it is not possible to establish if educational visits will be possible.
