The course aims to introduce attending students to the topical moments in the history of modern and contemporary music.
The student will acquire basic notions on the history of modern and contemporary music, both formal and historical; the composers and their works will be placed in the artistic context of the time.
The student is informed about the main events of the XVII-XX centuries, through the chronologies that will be found on the course page. For the general arrangement see The Cambridge History of Nineteenth-Century Music, ed. by Jim Samson, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2001 («The Cambridge History of Music»), passim.
Arias, romances, Lieder, chansons, mélodies, Songs: from Monteverdi to the Beatles.

The human being sings: if he is sad, happy, if he has drunk too much, if he is sentimental, when he courts another, or if he cries, in community, alone, in concert halls, in the halls of buildings, anywhere. In this module we will study vocal music of different eras and their respective forms, in a chronological span that goes from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. The title of the course is borrowed from a recital by Cathy Berberian, a brilliant voice between styles and eras, never regretted enough. To get a taste of its versatility I recommend the vision of There music and music, RAI, V. Mille e una voce (episode recorded in 1972), and as an example of stylistic hybridization Ticket to Ride (1965), by the Beatles in comparison with the neo-baroque version of the Berberian, made by Louis Andriessen.

The single pieces will be indicated in the first lessons.
