The course provides the main knowledge for the study of the history of contemporary art. The themes of the lessons are the movements of the late nineteenth century up to the avant-garde currents of late twentieth century, considering the most recent contemporary video-artistic practices.
Lines, currents and movements will be examined in their historical-cultural connection both diachronic and synchronic, with the purpose of developing knowledge on the protagonists of each period, as well as the capacity to identify each artistic phenomenon and place in correspondence to cultural contexts.
Awareness of artistic production of each period will be essential, stimulated through exercises of recognition and attribution of some of the fundamental works for the history of contemporary art.
- knowledge and understanding: acquiring knowledge of the fundamental terminology of the discipline; get to know the main exponents, works of art, groups and movements of the visual arts according to the program;
- ability to apply knowledge and understanding: knowing how to adopt the reference terminology and recognize the main artists and works of art under study, methodically adopting the tools provided during the lessons and the reference bibliography;
- judgment skills: succeeding in the analysis of a work of art, examining the style and expressive choices of a single artist, current or artistic movement among those identified during the course, placing them correctly in their respective cultural contexts and reference time; knowing how to master the presentation of a given topic using an appropriate language and applying a formal analysis of the work;
- communication skills: knowing how to use appropriate and specific terminology, acquired during the lessons or through the study of the texts indicated; knowing how to argue with accuracy and language properties the theoretical foundations deepened during the course; knowing how to sustain a respectful and fruitful discussion with one's own reference teachers and with one's peers.
- learning skills: learning to use bibliographic resources and digital tools in the study of visual arts, to search for them in institutional contexts, such as museums, galleries, exhibitions, and online platforms (databases, catalogs, archives).
There are no pre-requirement but it is recommendable a preliminary knowledge of Ancient, Medieval and Modern art.
