By using a socio-literary and artistic approach, we aim to understand the historical and socio-political reality of the South Mediterranean. In particular, we will tackle the issue of "modernity" , its misunderstanding and how it is perceived in the South Mediterranean countries.
At the end of the course, the students will be able to correlate the contemporary arts with their cultural and political context;
they will be able to critically analyze a wide range of texts (both literary and figurative) made up in the South Mediterranean countries.
Knowledge of English and French is required together with a basic knowledge of the Islamic civilization. To the students who never approached this topic I suggest to read:
Cherif Bassiuni: Introduction to Islam: An online Text: https://www.mei.edu/publications/introduction-islam
The course critically approaches the ways in which contemporary arts influence -and are influenced by- social, cultural, political issues. We will connect these issue with their historical past in the area. We will focus on a selection of both literary and visual texts and on the themes they present and how they impact on contemporary societies.
