The course aims at helping students to develop their ability to understand and produce written and oral texts in Modern Standard Arabic, as well as to cope with the diglottic situation of the contemporary Arabophone world, by introducing them to basic elements of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, the most widely understood variety of Arabic in the region.
Lectures focus on both sintax and vocabulary.
Discussions will be in Middle Arabic (Standard & Colloquial)
Proposed materials concern Arab visions of Europe and South-North migration across the Mediterranean.
Students will be able to:
- understand and produce written texts in Modern Standard Arabic;
- understand and produce simple oral texts in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic;
- understand and produce oral texts in mixed Arabic (Stardard & Colloquial) regarding topics dealt with during the course.
Arabic Language proficiency corresponding to B1 level of the CEFR.
Arab visions of Europe; South-North migration across the Mediterranean; Egyptian Colloquial Arabic.

Materials provided by the teacher.
Oral exam. Students will be asked to: read and vocalise Arabic texts and provide rough translations thereof; comment materials analysed during the course.
Lectures. Textual approach for literary texts and communicative approach for other materials.
Teaching language: English (for grammar explanations and translations).
Attendance is compulsory.
