Finally a course on Middle East's contemporary issues! For the first time at "Ca' Foscari", I will be glad to start this brand new teaching experience: a course on Turkey's Republican History! Beginning with the first decade of the 20th century, the course aims at contextualizing the birth of the Turkish nation in the political and cultural climate in the final period of the Ottoman Empire's existence. All through the "long" 20th century, the course will deal with nowadays issues, such as the AKP governance, the Turkish intervention in the Syrian conflict and the ultimate birth of a new internal opposition.
The course aims at promoting a comparative kind of awareness on the potentialities of Turkey, as an essential democratic and industrial country of the Mediterranean area and the Middle East.
No precondition is due. Nevertheless, it is warmly suggested to have already followed, or at least to follow in the meantime, the course of History of the Ottoman Empire.
-The end of the Tanzimat
-The Young Turks era
-The First Republic (1923-1945)
-Transition to democracy (1945-1950)
-The Second Republic (1960-1980)
-The economic reforms
-The Third Republic (1980-today)
