Deindustrialization on stage

As well as a structural economic change, deindustrialization triggers deep social, political cultural and urban transformations. In the areas that have been affected, it entailed many initiatives of representation and “mise-en-scène” of the industrial past and its vanishing. The course will explore how literature, poetry, music, theatre, cinema and visual arts are valuable sources for a perspective “from below” on industrial decline and the transition to a postindustrial society. Much attention will be paid to the case of Porto Marghera (Venezia).

Either way, it will include a suitable number of readings, aiming at writing an original paper (10.000 characters minimum) that will be discussed during the exam.
