The course aims at broadening, as allowed by the covered topics, students' knowledge of classical Chinese civilization, and in particular of the earliest philosophical-religious thought and of the language used in the texts of the time.
Better knowledge and understanding of classical chinese language and of the confucian thought by analysis of selected passages from the Lunyu and other related sources.
A good command of Classical Chinese is absolutely required for participation in this course.
General remarks on the concept of 'rite' and on the different meanings and interpretations of Li 禮. Translation and analysis of passages from Confucius' Analects (Lunyu 論語) and later sources (in particular from Liji 禮記). The original texts, with translations and explanatory glosses, will be supplied during the lessons.

The exam will be written. During the allotted time, the student will have to answer a series of open questions with answers of varying lengths, in which he will have to summarize one of the key-topics addressed in class, answer questions related to texts, characters and technical terms, and provide the translation of some of the passages critically analyzed during the lessons.
The course will take place on Moodle, through the regular publication of materials relating to the 15 lessons scheduled during the semester.
