ROMANCE PHILOLOGY

The translation from ver to Latin: the "Milione"; Boccaccio and Petrarca.
The course aims to contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills that are the goal of the Philological Program by tackling a stylistic-cultural theme. While the translation from Latin to vernacular is common practice in the Middle Ages, the reverse exercise is much less frequent. The course aims to define procedures and cultural characters through two specific cases: the Latin translation of Francesco Pipino's "Milione", and Petrarch's version of the novel X 10 of the "Decameron" (Griselda's novel).

- overall picture of the translation practice in the vulgar Middle Ages;
Skills
- acquisition of linguistic and stylistic analysis schemes to be used in contrastive analysis.

Basic knowledge of morphosyntax: Old Italian, Old French, Latin.

- The translation practice in the vernacular Middle Ages vulgar: from Latin to vernacular;
- the reverse exception: Pippin and Petrarch.

Texts and bibliography will be provided during the lessons, and made available on the Moodle platform.

Oral modality: textual analysis.

Analysis of texts in contrastive mode: syntax and style.

During the year, a seminar will be organized. It will be open to undergraduates students, to students of the Graduate Program and to anyone interested. It will be dedicated to the problem of the modern translation of medieval texts. The seminar will be divided into two parts, one per semester; his attendance will entitle any participant to 3 or 6 ECTS of activity equivalent to a Stage. Information on dates and times will be provided in early September 2020.
