An Introduction to the comparative analysis of narrative texts: Boccaccio and the Romance tradition.
Some novels of the "Decameron" (in which Boccaccio reworked the fabulae of medieval narrative texts) will be the subject of the exercises, by using narratological instruments. The goal is to teach an analysis technique applicable to any narrative tradition.
Acquisition of two abilities: (a) to analyze a plot: selection of primary and secondary elements, to be compared with those obtained from other texts; (b) to produce a typological synthesis of the results of the comparison.
Being able to to translate short texts from the originals (in Latin, ancient French).
Introduction to narratology;
Analysis of a Boccaccio's short story and of its sources (plot and ideological meaning).
Minimum bibliography and texts to be analyzed will be provided on Moodle during the exercises.
The skills acquired will be verified during the exam of Romance Philology II (the exam is oral).
