The specific training objective of the course is to provide the basic knowledge of the laboratory techniques useful to set up simple experiments of organic synthesis (from the assembly of the apparatus, to the conduct of the experiment, up to the purification of the obtained product). To this end, the equipment used in the organic chemistry laboratories will be illustrated, showing the students the most correct use, in compliance with the safety standards for workers and the environment. The fundamental operations aimed at the purification of products obtained from an organic synthesis will also be explained in detail, possibly allowing a choice among several possible alternatives by virtue of the economy, simplicity, safety or eco-sustainability of the chosen process.

iii) use the appropriate scientific-technical terminology for the description and discussion of the conduct of a simple organic synthesis or purification experiment;

i) on the basis of the knowledge acquired, knowing how to choose appropriately the main synthesis techniques in organic chemistry and the apparatuses that are used for this purpose;
ii) on the basis of the knowledge acquired, knowing how to properly choose the main purification techniques in organic chemistry and the apparatuses that are used for this purpose;
3. Ability to judge
i) knowing how to evaluate comparatively the effectiveness of different synthetic strategies, in terms of choice of reagents and reaction conditions;
ii) know how to roughly estimate between different organic synthesis strategies, which is preferable for human health and the environment;
5. Learning skills
i) knowing how to observe the phenomena that occur during an experiment, independently identifying the significant phenomena, eventually succeeding in deducing the cause or the effects.
To have achieved the training objectives of the Organic Chemistry 1 course - Module 1.
Module 2 of the course aims to show in practice some reactions illustrated in the "theoretical" course, providing the rational and technical tools to execute them and deduce the result.
Module 1 is carried out completely before proceeding with the theoretical lessons and access to the laboratory sessions of Module 2, in order to allow a minimum of reflection on the topics covered, but at the same time allowing the students to express their doubts during the sessions. laboratory.

The access to the laboratory is denied to students that have not attended and passed the course HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR TEACHING AND RESEARCH [SIC001] (AF:215867 AR:98972)
Introductory lessons to organic synthesis techniques (ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 1 AND LABORATORY - MOD.2)
- Equipment commonly used in the laboratory
- Purification and isolation methods: extraction; distillation; sublimation; crystallization; filtration; chromatography.
- Characterization methods: boiling point; melting point.

Laboratory experiences (ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 1 AND LABORATORY - MOD.2 Class 1 or Class 2)
1) thin layer chromatography (TLC);
2) column chromatography;
3) recognition assays of some functional groups;
4) liquid-liquid extraction,
5) recrystallization;
6) solid-liquid extraction (Soxhlet);
7) fractional distillation;
8) Fisher esterification (synthesis and characterization).
The didactic material projected in the classroom during the theoretical lessons is present and can be downloaded on the University's "moodle" platform.

In the "moodle" platform of the University there are the handouts of the experiences, including the comprehension tests to be completed at the end of the experience and the safety documentation concerning the materials used in each experience.

The verification of learning takes place through a written test and an oral test.
Mandatory conditions for access to the written and oral exam are:
1) the presence of at least 7 out of 8 laboratory sessions of the "Course of Organic Chemistry 1 and Laboratory - Module 2";
2) the delivery of all 8 tests of verification of laboratory experiences by the working group.

Except in exceptional cases, the oral exam is held the day after the written exam, according to the calendar scheduled by the University.
The written test consists of a series of exercises on the entire program (see content section), aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and skills acquired in solving simple problems of organic synthesis and through the correct reaction mechanism. During the written test lasting about one hour, the use of books, notes and electronic media is not permitted.
The oral exam consists of a series of questions to which the student must answer proving to know and know how to expose the topics of the entire program (see content section) with properties of language and use of the correct chemical symbology. The oral exam lasts from 15 to 30 minutes, due to the clarity and consistency of the answers given to the questions asked.
The final score of the exam is evaluated mainly (80-85%) based on the outcome of the written test, while the evaluation of the oral test is to supplement (in positive or negative) the written test score.

Teaching is preceded by five lectures aimed at understanding the instruments and methods usually used in organic synthesis.

CHIMICA ORGANICA 1 E LABORATORIO - MOD.2 Classe 1 o Classe 2
The students are divided into two "Classes" in order to minimize the risks deriving from overcrowding in the laboratory.
Within each "Class", 10-11 "work groups" are further divided in order to safely perform the prorie experiences under 10-11 extractor hoods present in the laboratory.
Before each workshop session, short class meetings are scheduled to describe and discuss the possible problems of the practical experience to be faced and the specific expedients to overcome them successfully.
