The course gives to the student a structured and comprehensive basis of the physical, chemical, biological and combined processes which are currently used worldwide for the treatment of civil wastewater and municipal solid waste, the main waste matrices produced by urbanization. In addition, the course describes the approaches linked to the related environmental safeguards. In particular, a restricted overview is given to the parts of interest to the waste matrices in relation to the current regulatory framework, followed by a detailed description of the techniques currently utilized for the chemical/physical/biological characterization of waste streams. The course also provides a detailed description of the respirometric methods, currently at the state of the art in the process description in the field of biological wastewater treatment. Regarding the management, monitoring and process control, an exhaustive descriptions are provided for all the unit operations dedicated to the treatment of waste streams, both liquid and solid, and their relative sizing and design. Finally, aspects related to environmental safeguards for mitigating the impacts of effluent flows from these types of plants will be addressed.
The course includes an extensive illustration of case studies, where the methods applied for the control and monitoring of each unit operations will be analyzed. Therefore, the student will be able, in full autonomy, to define in detail the mass and energy balances of the supply chains to be implemented, as required content in the technical documents according to the current regulations on public works.
