The course introduces the study of racism and intercultural relations in the contemporary world aiming to achieve the following objectives: present the main theories and the main analytical tools concerning racism and intercultural relationsin; provide in-depth knowledge of the causes, dimensions and forms of racism, with particular attention to the European and Italian context; give student skills and abilities concerning intercultural relations to apply in studies and social work.
At the end of the course the student:
- has knowledge of the theoretical framework and concepts necessary for the study and analysis of racism and inequalities;
- has a general framework of racism in the Western world, of main generative causes and his main forms (taken in time and space);
- is able to clearly formulate the content of the course, to use properly the current terminology in the field of racism and intercultural relations inequalities, to argue in support of the principal theoretical hypotheses, to give examples in order to support or refute a hypothesis of analysis;
- is able to collect information, provide analysis and interpretations by applying acquired knowledge, providing relevant examples built autonomously;
- is able to communicate and interact with different audiences.

I fondamenti sociali e i caratteri generali del razzismo (il razzismo come rapporto sociale di dominazione).
Gli elementi e le dimensioni della dottrina razziale (il razzismo come ideologia).
La costruzione sociale della razza e i processi di razzializzazione.
Razzismi di ieri e di oggi: islamofobia, romfobia, afrofobia, razzismo culturale, razzismo ambientale, la xenofobia in nome del welfare.
Pluralismo culturale, multiculturalismo, interculturalità.
L'interculturalità come processo di emancipazione
Interculturalità ed espressioni artistiche (letteratura, poesia, musica, teatro).
Buone pratiche interculturali. Studi di casi e progetti per l'interculturalità.

The evaluation will be based on a written exam. Three groups of tracks are provided and students develop a track for each group.
Lectures and seminars with discussion; case-study.
