The course provides concepts related to the diagnosis and restoration of artistic heritage. It discusses the material nature of paintings, describing the main types of conservation treatment carried out on them. It shows how modern conservation emphasises long-term stabilisation of paintings by methods that alter their structure as little as possible.
The course allows students to analyse and recognize restoration of paintings, evaluate their state of preservation and the need for restoration.
It aims to provide an adequate knowledge of the executive techniques for mural paintings, wood panels and canvas, as well as conservation and restoration methods.
Furthermore, students are expected to acquire a basic knowledge of scientific diagnostic methods for art restoration.
