This course is one of the educational activities called “affini e integrative” of the master's degree program in Language Sciences that allows students to deepen their knowledge and practice in the field of digital education.
Within the framework of narrative pedagogy and media education, which recognise narration as a fundamental culturally mediated socio-cognitive device in human development, the course aims to provide the theoretical and practical foundations on the role and functions of narrative in learning processes (analogue and digital), in formal and informal educational contexts.
The course is divided into two parts: the first part aims to introduce students to how digital media affect the educational development of children and adolescents and to explore what role narrative plays in the development of cognitive, emotional and cultural processes, in informal and formal settings. The second part of the course involves workshops on educational design and teaching digital storytelling.
1. Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge of the topics presented during the course, in particular aspects related to the impact of narrative media on education, the development of narrative processes and skills and educational and didactic approaches in formal settings
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: to analyse the different analogic and digital narrative languages; to distinguish the different cognitive, affective, social and cultural processes involved in narrative development; to know how to construct narrative settings with reference to educational purposes.
3. Autonomy of judgement. To develop autonomy of judgement, critical capacity and reflection on the topics dealt with, on the relationships between the theories and educational approaches.
4. Communication skills. To acquire the technical language and the ability to present and discuss with clarity and coherence the topics studied with specialist and non-specialist interlocutors.
5. Learning skills. To be able to keep up to date with the latest theoretical approaches to digital storytelling in informal and formal settings.

b) Petrucco, C., & De Rossi, M. (2014). Narrare con il digital storytelling a scuola e nelle organizzazioni. Carocci (for students not attending)
Learning will be tested by means of a written examination consisting of multiple-choice and short open-ended questions. These questions cover both theoretical knowledge learned during the course and the ability to reason and apply it to case studies.
The assessment criteria for the short-answer questions on theoretical knowledge and reasoning are: (a) the accuracy of the information reported in relation to the theoretical knowledge learned (b) the appropriate use of the language of the discipline; (c) the validity of the argument; (d) the communicative and expository effectiveness.
Students who regularly attend classes are given the opportunity to carry out both individual activities and group work during the course with a view to preparing for the exam.
Lessons will be complemented with workshop activities on storytelling, supported by video materials and online resources. In order to prepare students for the final examination, the course offers the opportunity to participate in didactic activities in presence and online (Moodle) to self-evaluate learning, with the assistance of the teacher and tutor.
