As part of the the curriculum of European and American and Postcolonial Languages and Literatures, Literature and Culture, this course aims to provide students a broad understanding of the historical and cultural context and literary production in Spain of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century (the so-called "Edad de Plata") with a focus on the literary and linguistic diversity of Spain .
It also aims to provide some critical and methodological base to students, for the acquisition, understanding and analysis of texts that promote their independence of judgment.
Lessons, readings, text analysis and examinations will take place in Spanish, in order to consolidate comprehension skills and communication in an appropriate language.
Expected learning outcomes are:
-knowledge of Spain's literay history with special attention to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries;
-political and cultural history of Spain between 1898 and 1936;
-knowledge of essential critical notions to analyse literary texts;
-ability to develop literary texts interpretation with bibliographical source;
-capacity for autonomous apprenticeship that allow students to apply new knowledge to required readings.
Knowledge of Spanish language. Basic knowledge of twentieth century Spanish history and literature; analytical skills and critical commentary of literary texts.
The course introduces broad outlines of the cultural context underlying the literary, artistic and film in Spain at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in its links with the European context. The study of the salient features of the great aesthetic-literary currents in their evolution will complement some insights of authors and works of particular importance. It is foreseen the analysis of excerpts from the works on the program and from other works.

b) Study texts
José-Carlos Mainer. La Edad de Plata (1902-1939) : ensayo de interpretación de un proceso cultural. Segunda edicion. ed. Madrid: Cátedra.
Final exam is a written test. It consists of four questions (the student must answer two of their choice) in order to ensure the skills acquired in the analysis of texts, art works, and film. Questions include two or more topics discussed in the course. During the written exam is not allowed to use books, notes, electronic media.
To pass the exam is required:
-active participation in class.
-short critical essay on the literary texts.
-class presentation of one of these texts.
-final written exam.

The constant and active participation in lessons and two cultural activities indicated by the instructor will award a bonus of up to 2 points on the final grade.
