This is a course aimed at completing the training in microeconomic theory beyond the core courses of the first year. It is meant to give additional notions and tools needed to be able to understand and analyze critically current theoretical literature.
At the end of the course students will have acquired some of the key concepts to be able to understand and analyze critically current theoretical literature.
Successful completion of the first year Ph.D. sequence in Microeconomics.
In this course we will go through additional material not covered in the first year sequence on microeconomics.

The plan is to cover a selection of topics from:

Monopolistic screening.

Auction Theory.

Mechanism Design.

Cheap Talk

Bayesian Persuasion.

Depending on time, we will select some recent papers and organize students presentations to discuss them. The selection of papers might be either reflecting the list of topics above or introduce students to an additional topic/literature.
For the part on auction theory and the mechanism design part you can refer to Krishna (2002), Auction Theory, 2nd edition. For monopolistic screening you can refer to Mas-Colell, Whinston and Green (1995), Microeconomic theory, and The Economics of Contracts by Bernard Salanié. For the other topics specific readings may be provided in addition to the slides of the course.
There will be a written exam at the end of the course (90min). Some weight might be given to students' presentation (if assigned).
There will be fifteen meetings, during some of the lectures we will also practice with some exercises. Students may also be asked to present selected papers.
