The course lectures on contemporary East Asian societies, including Japan, by focusing on economic changes mainly. For this purpose, it approaches Asia from the following four changes: trade, production, capital, and migration. The lectures pay attention to "global connections" that constitutes present Asia. The lessons on "global Asian studies" aim to offer basic knowledge on Asia for understanding the contemporary.
Knowledge and understanding:
- to know and understand the contemporary economies and societies in Asia, including Japan

Applying knowledge and understanding:
- to use the latest knowledge of economies and societies in Asia and global perspective in the research

Making judgments:
- to exercise judgment within the latest knowledge global perspective

Communication:
- to write a research essay by using the latest knowledge and global perspective
It is recommended that students possess an intermediate level of the Japanese language (Level N3 JLPT) to integrate and deepen issues presented during the course. Moreover, students should have already a good knowledge of modern and contemporary Japanese history.
The course lectures on contemporary Asian societies according to the following four aspects:

-global value chain and trade in Asia
-global value chain and production in Asia
-capital flow and financial systems in Asia
-migrant workers and migrant labour force in Asia

Students must write a research essay on an issue related to contemporary Asian societies in Japanese or English (max 3000 characters in Japanese, max 1500 words in English). The exam assesses the student's knowledge and perspective acquired during the course, ability to apply them, and communication skills and autonomy of judgment.

NON ATTENDING: The exam program will be the same as the attending students.

Frontal lessons in Japanese.

Attendance and participation during classes will not be evaluated but are encouraged.
