This course falls within the characterizing teachings of the first year of the "Near and Middle East" curriculum of the course "Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa". Its formative objectives fall within the area of language skills learning.
The objectives of the course are: to provide knowledge and skills for the metalinguistic analysis of the Persian language and for the translation from Persian into Italian. The course aims to introduce students to the main forms and methods of translation from Persian into Italian. Through some theoretical reflections and practice on the texts we will try to acquaint students with the greatest difficulties of translation and possible solutions. Part of the course will be devoted to know and use the most important printed and on-line dictionaries.
At the end of the course the student must have acquired a basic competence on the main theories of Translation Studies and Post-Translation Studies; must be able to analyze some texts in translation (both in prose and in poetry), comparing them with the source texts and highlighting the critical points; the student has to demonstrate linguistic analysis skills and the ability to translate into Italian some pages of simple contemporary prose.
Knowledge of basic Persian grammar
The course will be divided into four parts: introduction to Translation Studies; comparative analysis of lexical and syntactic choices on exemplifying texts (Persian texts, in poetry or prose, and their published translation into Italian); introduction to the main tools available for the translation (theoretical reflection on the texts of the translation process, choice and use of dictionaries and online resources); practice and verification of texts of different literary genres.
