The course Translation Theory and Methodology (English) is part of the activities defined as affini/integrative, which characterize this Postgraduate Degree. The course consists is a semestral module in which competences will be acquired both at methodological and theoretical level. Students will attend both lectures and specialized seminars on the theoretical and methodological aspects of translation which have characterized the debate on translation from the 1960s to our days.
At the end of the course students will be enabled to discuss the principal translation theories which have characterized the debate on translation since the 1960s. They will also be able to comment on a variety of translation approaches according to the specificity of the translation task. Furthermore, they will learn specific translation terminology and will be able to discuss specific choices for the study and practice of translation.
They will also be able to use the material provided by their teacher in an autonomous way and will be able to self-assess the skills and competences acquired during the course.
Pre-requisites of this course are a level C1 of the QCER. A good level of autonomy in the study method and a substantial cultural background will favour a rapid acquisition of the content of the course.
The course will offer a diachronic overview of the development of the study on translation from the early linguistic approaches by Catford in the 1960s to the dynamic and cultural approach developed by NIda and the debate on the birth of a new discipline, Translation Studies, in the early '70s. Works by scholars such as James Holmes, Mary Snell-Hornby, Gideon Toury, Itamar Even-Zohar, Andrè Lefevere e Susan Bassnett will be taken into examination. Contemporary debates on translation ethics, gender issues and postcolonial approaches to translation will be given space in the last part of the course.
