Students will be able to develop and deepen their understanding of Dante, his works, and of the scholarly critical tradition that they had gained during their three-year degree by focusing on the Commedia.
Each student will acquire knowledge of the main methodologies of textual analysis and of key critical problems relating to Dante’s Commedia.

A knowledge of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italian literature. Students are required to have read the Commedia before the start of the course.
An overview of Dante’s Divine Comedy that concentrates on questions of interpretation and criticism.
A recent edition of the Commedia with commentary to be chosen from the following list:
U. Bosco & G. Reggio (Le Monnier, 1988 o ristampe); A.M. Chiavacci Leonardi (Mondadori, 1991-97 o ristampe); G. Inglese (Carocci, 2011-16).

Evaluation of students’ learning progress will take place EITHER through an oral examination during which two questions will normally be set, on the following topics:
(a) reading and commenting on a passage of the Commedia,
(b) principal critical problems relating to the Commedia;
OR a 4000-word written research paper on a topic linked to the Commedia (the topic needs to be approved by Zyg Barański).
