Acquaintance with the fundamental idea of archival sciences through the examination of the archive's management and preservation; acquaintance with information accessing systems - both historical and modern; acquaintance with research methods and instruments in historical archives; acquaintance with different types of archives. The seminar, considered as basic activity in the BA program in History, curricula Archive and Library studies and as a core educational activity in the BA program, Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management, Curricula Art History, offers knowledge of the history and management of documentary material, as well as the archival methodology to allow cultural operators (librarians, archivists, historians and art historians, operators and museum curators) to acquire skills in the treatment of archival material and its contextualisation, exploitation and enhancement.
Through the critical acquisition of the contents offered by the course, the student should have achieved at the end of the module the necessary skills to orientate himself in the disciplinary articulation of archival sciences and understand the general lines of the methods of production, management, conservation, planning and valorization of the archives.
No particular prerequisites are required.
The course will have ten lessons in which the following themes will be examined:
1. Introduction to archival sciences
2. Definition and role of the archive
3. History of archives
4. Different types: public and private, ecclesiastical, family and personal archives
5. Record creation and recordkeeping
6. Archival organization
7. Archives and information technology
8. Legislation and normative evolution

- Maria Barbara Bertini, Che cos'e un archivio, Roma, Carocci, 2008 (students are asked to contact the tutor via mail for indication regarding accessibility to the book)
- Elio Lodolini, Archivistica. Principi e problemi. Milano, FrancoAngeli, 2008 (preferably 13e edizion - see file on Moodle, but any other edition is also recommended)
- Isabella Zanni Rosiello, Gli archivi nella societa contemporanea, Bologna, Il Mulino 2009
- Patrizia Angelucci, Breve storia degli archivi e dell?archivistica, Perugia, Morlacchi, 2008
- On Moodle, the student will have access to files containing materials from class to be added to the books indicated for the exam
In the exam the student will be asked to explain 5 archival concepts. Each concept would have a value of 6 points maximum. Duration of the exam: 15 minutes in total. The material consists of the notes uploaded on the Moodle platform and the reading of the books. If you are unable to obtain the required books and follow the reading with the help of the "guided reading" file (uploaded to Moodle), I would ask you to let me know by mail: raines@unive.it.
COVID-19 EMERGENCY: In case the emergency persists, the exam will take place on Zoom/Moodle. The student will have to register for the exam. The link to the exam session is found on Moodle, at the section: Calendario lezioni in streaming. The student will have to click on the link, accept the microphone and camera enabling and click on: participate now.
