The course is part of the core educational activities of the Master's Degree in Conservation Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage, and it allows the students to acquire the basic knowledge and the understanding of physical chemistry of solids and of the basics concepts behind the advanced materials and nanomaterials used for conservation.
1.Knowledge and understanding
To know and to be familiar with the advanced materials and nanomaterials used for conservation.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Ability to apply this knowledge to practical CH applications.

3. Judgment skills
Ability to evaluate, in a reasoned manner, experimental results associated with advanced materials and nanomaterials used for conservation.

4. Communication skills
To use in an appropriate way the terminology and the symbolism learnt during the course.
To interact with the teachers and the classmates in a dynamic, effective and proper way,

To take notes during classes in a proper way, evidencing the topics according to their importance

By the end of the course the students will have an in depth appreciation for, and knowledge of, the various advanced materials and nanomaterials used for conservation.
The prerequisites for the course include the knowledge of inorganic chemistry and/or materials science and chemistry and physics of the solid state, in line with the training objectives of the Physical Chemistry courses.
The course will cover the synthesis, application of and knowledge of the various types of advanced materials and nanomaterials used for conservation.

After an introduction to the theory behind nanomaterials in lessons 1-9, the course will look at:

Lecture 17 Consolidation and Preservation of Wood

Lecture 18 Consolidation and Preservation of Waterlogged Wood

Lecture 19 Materials for Deacidification and Preservation of Paper, Documents and Textiles

Lecture 20 Development of Inorganic Carbon Based Nanomaterials for Conservation

Lecture 21 Photocatalytic and Self-Cleaning (superhydrophobic/hydrophilic Nanomaterials for Conservation

Written exam. The written exam will be questions in essay style, choosing 2 from 3 given general subjects from the course. During the exam, the use of notes, books and other teaching materials is not allowed (closed book).
