ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This course aims to provide students with the opportunity to study present-day questions concerning the philosophy underlying political and social movements: for example, Aristotle’s political theory and modern-day questions, current anglo-saxon interpretations of Dante, issues of culture and identity (Fukuyama), social inequality (J.Rothman and R.Reich), the search for truth and the issue of freedom of expression in mass media,and others, time and preference permitting.

The pedagogical goals of the course consist in perfecting students' ability to read, understand, and discuss philosophical topics orally in English.

Level B1 in English (CEFR) as specified in the university regulation concerning admittance to the laurea triennale program..

Please note: Two "lettorato" courses for language training are offered along with this text-based course ("monografico"). There is a test for each of these, which can be taken either before or after, or in the same session or different sessions with regard to the exam for this course. That is, the student remains autonomous in her or his choice of when and during which "appello" or "appelli" to sit for each test or exam.The time limit is one academic year (four appelli).
The final grade, however, a single one, is validated only after completion of all three exams, and this grade is attributed only by the professor of the text-based course (yours truly).

Study of recent texts and accompanying videos, free discussion, organized debates on philosophical topics and (voluntary) essay writing based on the course material.

The exam consists in an oral exam of one or two questions. For students having participated in an organized debate in class (online participation permitted) ,there will be one question on the course material to be adequately developed. For those not having participated in a debate in class, there will be two questions based on the course material.
Non-attending students: The program is identical, but non-attending students are strongly encouraged to meet with me at least once during office hours, either online or in-person, to allow for proper follow-up of their work.
The opportunity to elaborate an essay, not obligatory, on the course material will be offered if the student wishes extra training in writing on topics related to philosophy, history or culture..

Students qre required to prepare the texts for each theme before coming to class, paying particular attention to the main elements, in order to facilitate free discussion and debate. Oral participation is encouraged. On moodle you will find suggestions on possible philosophical topics for debate.

Online participation is authorized only for valid and exceptional reasons such as those related to distance, illness, work or family obligations. Students must be present with both video and audio on, using their unive.it account and full name. Black screens or screens with only profile photos will not be tolerated.
