The teaching of Portuguese and Brazilian Literature 1 is common to all the branches of the degree course in Languages, Civilisation and Language Sciences. The course aims to provide an overview of the relationship between literature and migration through the in-depth study of three novels from the literature in Portuguese language: L'ora della stella, by Clarice Lispector (Brazil); Requiem for the solitary navigator, by Luís Cardoso (Timor Este); and Libro, by José Luís Peixoto (Portugal).
1. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the features of the literary genre of the novel, with particular deepening of the development of the genre connected to the socio-cultural and historical-political dynamics that affect the different spaces of the Portuguese language; strengthen understanding of the relationship between literature and migration as a form of restlessness to articulate different cultural forms;
2. Applied knowledge and understanding: apply the knowledge acquired to the contextualization of novels in the historical-cultural, literary and political framework in which they were produced; address important issues such as: migration and cultural translation, inclusion and exclusion, prejudices or stereotypes, identity and otherness;
3. Autonomy of judgment: ability to acquire and apply adequate critical tools in the analysis of the narrative texts indicated, on a thematic and stylistic-formal level, also by relating them to the context;
4. Communication skills: understand the presentation of an academic speech; knowing how to present a problem studied in a clear and coherent manner; knowing how to argue in a coherent and effective way;
5. Learning skills: learning to recognize the typology of a text and formulating hypotheses for analysis, learning to establish in-depth links between the facts and materials examined and ideas;
Basic knowledge of European history and culture of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Antonio Tabuchi, the great Italian writer and profound scholar of Portuguese language and literature, in 2008, spoke of a definition, a figure that could characterize the twentieth century, which is restlessness, showing how this feeling could take various forms, especially after the Second World War. This course is dedicated to the relationship between written Portuguese language literatures and emigration from the last quarter of the twentieth century to the first decade of our century, that is, from the end of the Portuguese empire and the dictatorships in Portugal and Brazil. The course aims to examine and comment on some concerns in the various Portuguese-speaking communities and how they are articulated in the socio-cultural context. The course will take place in four parts; one dedicated to discussing this mode of writing which is the novel and its role in Portuguese language literatures and another three dedicated to the works of writers and the literary systems connected to them. It also intends to address some important concepts related to migratory contexts such as: difference, stereotype, cultural translation or resilience.

Written test open book (Primary Texts). The student will choose three questions to answer from a list of nine (maximum one page for question, manuscript, time: 3h) It ames to verify the degree of achievement of the expected learning outcomes. In order to pass the exam, the student must do an original, personal critical comment.
