SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES - II

The course will provide concepts and sociological tools to understand and analyze racism. Objectives: provide basic knowledge of social roots of racism; provide in-depth knowledge of the dimensions, shapes and effects of contemporary racism; provide the student with basic skills and abilities to apply in studies and social work.

At the end of the course the student:
- has knowledge of the main conceptual tools necessary for studying racism, provided by most recent and advanced studies;
- has a general framework of racism in Europe and social, political and cultural processes related to it;
- is able to formulate the contents of the course, to use properly the current terminology in the field of racism, to argue in public debate on racism, provide examples to support or refute a hypothesis of analysis;
- is able to collect information, provide analysis and interpretations by applying acquired knowledge, providing relevant examples, built autonomously;
- is able to communicate and interact with different audiences.

There are not pre-requirements.

Race between invention and reality.
The social and historical roots of racism. Racism as a social relationship of exploitation and domination. Racism as a factor of production and reproduction of inequalities.
Characters of racial doctrine. Racism as an ideology for legitimizing exploitation and inequalities.
Doctrinal racism, institutional racism, popular racism.
Processes of racialisation and construction of the "other" as a race. The example of human zoos.
Old and new racisms. Biological racism and cultural racism; the rise of institutional racism; forms of contemporary racism; hate speech and online racism.

The evaluation will be based on a written exam. Three groups of tracks are provided and students develop a track for each group. Points assigned for each track: from 0 to 4.
