This course is included in the "attività caratterizzanti" (characterizing activites) of the master course in Lavoro, Cittadinanza Sociale, Interculturalità (Labour, Social Citizenship and Interculture) and it is related to the following objectives of the master:
- reaching ad advanced knwoledge of features and dynamics of contemporary societies with particular reference to contemporary welfare states
- an advanced knowledge of new social risks and of the policies implemented for addressing them.
Knowledge and understanding
The course aims at providing an advanced knowledge on social policies, particularly related to recent welfare state's changes, such as the emergence of new social risks and the austerity policies implemented during the economic crisis which cut the economic resources devoted to welfare state. At the end of the course student will be provided of:
-knowledge and understanding of different social policies' paradigms (keynesian policies, neo-liberism and social investment);
- knowledge and understanding of social innovation and co-production and of their main applications in actual social interventions;
-knowledge of policy tools used by Ue and Italian governmen addressing social effects of the pandemia.

Capacity of applying knowledge and understanding
After the course student will be able to:
-critically analyse contemporary social policies;
-identify strengths and weaknesses of Social Investment approach including its actual implementation in Italy and other European countries
-identify the fundamental elements of a social innovative policy or practice;
- critically analyse a specific policy related to a new social risks as described in the section "contents" (below)

In order to reach these goals, moments where students discuss on readings previously prepared will be scheduled: professor assigns readings to students who will present to the class. Moreover, students will be asked to prepare a presentation on social innovation projects, either existent projects or projects designed by students themselves. Students will use indicators in order to analyse or to design the innovation elements in the projects. If students present already existent projects they should highlight their strengths and weaknesses; if they design a new project, presenting students should argue about its efficacy and sustainability in the long term (other students will be asked to discuss the presentation).
Students should have a basic knowledge of the functioning of the welfare state and of the main social policies.
In this second module there will be an in depth presentation of various social policies and students will choose which policy thew want to "adopt" for the development of their final paper. Lectures will also deal with "direct social actions" in Italy especially as a response of the economic crisis.
Beside the specific contents of the policies a special attention will be paid to understand how scholars approach these policies from a methodological point of view.

Sudents of the curriculum in Welfare policies and social research (12 cfu):
Exam is written and oral. Written part counts 55% of the mark and it consists in the development of a paper of 8/10 pages. Students will choose a policy for combating a new social risk (a list will be provided). More details will be communicated during class and will be uploaded on moodle. The paper must be delivered through Moodle at least 3 days before the oral exam. On Moodle you will find the deadlines for each session and the space on which to upload the paper.
The oral part counts 45%; it consists in 2/3 questions on the mandatory texts (first and second module) and in the discussion of the paper previously delivered.
This modality is valid for both attending and non-attending students.
Attending students (frequentanti) are invited to give an oral presentation in group of max 3 persons. The presentation consists in the presentation of an existing social innovative practice. Students making the presentation will be exempted from an article or essay of their choice (more information will be provided during classes).

During the course there will be some lectures and some workshop where students are invited to present reading and discuss on issues related to the course objectives. During the course experts will be invited for discussing specific issues related to the course. At the beginning of the course a detailed calendar of the classes will be given.
