This course is offered during the second semester of the first year, and is a core (i.e. required) for all second year students. The corse is designed to discuss the most popular experimental techniques that can be (and indeed are) exploited in the ream of Cultural Heritage. Particular emphasis will be given to those techniques hinging upon the interactions between light and matter, bacause their minimally invasive nature. Within this framework, the course will describe both the basic principles and the applications.
Upon exit from this course, students will be able to
1. Be familiar with the basic physical principles of most popular techniques
2. Be aware of the pros and cons of each method
3. Identify the correct method to be used within a given context
The course is designed to be as self-contained as possible, so no previous specific knowledge will be assumed. Of course, students are expected to be familiar with elementary classical physics at an introductory level.
GENERAL PROPERTIES OF WAVES

Written and oral exams.
The exam will have two parts. There will be an oral exam for the fundamental part that will assess the progress of the students on this side, as well as a written project on a topic given by the instructor. Each part will contribute to 50% of the final grade.
A combination of traditional methods for the basic part and moodle interaction for the application parts. The course will also include few lectures from external experts on specific topics.
