INTERDISCIPLINARY LAB

The Interdisciplinary Lab provides tools to design and manage an “ideal” project of analysis, planning, and assessment in the framework of managing built heritage resources. The Interdisciplinary laboratory will focus on a building in Forte Marghera. The students will be guided in a global management procedure by which they will identify the different issues related to the archaeological aspects, the definition of the conservation state and the design and implementation of possible conservation practices.

The course aims to address possible management and conservation issues in a holistic manner, including:
- the evaluation aspect of the 'archaeological value', both absolute and relative of the property under examination;
- the conservation aspects of the property ;
- the aspects of monitoring the state of conservation;
- the hypotheses for medium and long-term conservation;
- the methods of monitoring the technical and cultural choices made

Students must have attended the courses: RESEARCH METHODS FOR ARCHAEOLOGY; SCIENTIFIC STRATEGIES FOR THE CONSERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

The Interdisciplinary Lab provides tools to design and manage an “ideal” project of analysis, planning, and assessment in the framework of managing built heritage resources. The Interdisciplinary laboratory will focus on a building in Forte Marghera. The students will be guided in a global management procedure by which they will identify the different issues related to the archaeological aspects, the definition of the conservation state and the design and implementation of possible conservation practices. The course will offer practical experiences of 3D architectural surveys via photogrammetry, which will be used as supporting data for the analysis of wall stratigraphies and for evaluating statical problems or other conservation issues. Assessment of the conservation status of the stone surfaces will be performed by theoretical and practical approaches, also by using non-invasive analyses. The students will explore the ethical and legal issues connected to the archaeology of modern conflicts, which is fostering significant debate in terms of the protection of non-monumental structures and material culture remains. During the course, some practical aspects of preparation and characterization of mortars and plasters with specific compatibility and durability characteristics will be proposed by using a model of the original brickwork as a base for a possible in situ intervention. Finally, we will discuss the role of public and participatory archaeology in involving all relevant stakeholders in knowledge-production and decision-making processes, aiming to raise awareness on the value of protecting and preserving the historical and archaeological heritage, especially among the local communities.

All the didactic materials will be available on Moodle.

The final assessment will base 80% on the student's active participation in the field and the laboratory activities, 20% on the quality of a short report summarising the activity, developed according to the instructions given by professors at the beginning of the course.
