The course is a core activity of the Degree program in Economics and Finance and complements other courses in Finance in understanding the drivers and mechanisms that characterize financial markets. The course is targeted to learning about and developing competences to deal with the banking system and the capital markets. Students will learn about how corporate and investment banking work, which corporate needs can be addressed by them and how.
Upon completion of the course students will have

In terms of knowledge and understanding, the students will:
- understand which are the main elements that characterize corporate banking (in terms of information sources, services and instruments).

Regarding the application of knowledge and understanding, the students will:
- learn to evaluate and discuss the feasibility and appropriateness of the main corporate banking operations;
- understand how to structure and implement some of the main corporate banking operations.

In terms of judgment abilities, the students will:
- learn to present well-structured arguments to support the decision of whether or not to implement corporate banking operations.
Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of banking financing and corporate finance.
The course focuses on one specific type of external financing for firms and corporations: bank debt. Besides providing an overview of the different types of loans (and their purpose both from the firm's and the bank's points of view) the course frames bank's activities within its regulatory framework and looks at how sustainability considerations affect the cost of bank debt. The course also looks at other forms of debt (corporate debt, both traditional and green) and to venture capital and private equity as other sources of external funding. Business cases, hands-on examples and activities will be part of the course besides frontal lectures and class discussions.

Some journal articles will be also used and made available through the Moodle page of the course.
The course includes a written exam with 13 multiple-choice questions and one open-ended question to be completed in 40 minutes, types of questions and further details will be provided during the course. Elective extra activities will be available and will contribute to the final grade, more details will be provided at the beginning of the course.
The course will be characterized by frontal lectures by the instructor and guided class discussions. The course materials will be available through Moodle. It is possible that some professional guests will be invited to some lectures.
