The course aims to provide students with the main knowledge and tools for a historical-artistic analysis of the Italian Renaissance art, with particular attention to its greatest protagonists, historical periods, contexts and iconographies. The aim of the course is also the construction of a critical approach that relaunches the idea of Art History as a humanistic discipline, strengthened by the importance of knowledge and contexts, indispensable elements for a correct understanding of any historical-artistic phenomenon.
The bibliography will be communicated at the beginning of the course.
For basic knowledge in addition to the course notes, the student may refer to S.J. Campbell and M.W. Cole, "The Art of the Renaissance in Italy. A new history", Turin, Einaudi, 2015.
The written examination consists in the recognition of three works of art of which it will be necessary to identify the author, the subject (with careful iconographic analysis), the dating and the historical-artistic context. Following are two open-ended questions to which it will be necessary to provide synthetic answers (maximum 20 lines) able to account for the knowledge acquired. The correct use of the Italian language and an appropriate vocabulary will also be evaluated.
