The course is scheduled among the compulsory subjects in the degree course in History of Arts and Conservation of artistic Heritage.
This course will give you the opportunity to acquire an advanced knowledge of research methodology applied to artistic processes from the modern age to the contemporary period.
The teaching activities focus on promoting an in-depth critical understanding of the fundamentals of art history and the acquisition of more mature skills in the context of recent art-historical debate.
The course will equip you for positions of responsibility in the study and conservation, cataloguing, management and promotion of art-historical heritage; in the organisation and management of artistic and cultural exhibitions, and in the planning and implementing of cultural and educational activities.
1. Knowledge
An in-depth knowledge of the approaches, methods and instruments of the history of modern and contemporary art that are at the cutting edge of current studies.
2. Communicative skills
Each student will be able to clearly communicate and substantiate the contents of the course.
3. Critical skills
Each student will be able to critically evaluate the historical evolution of research methodology applied to artistic processes in the last thirty years.
Requirements: students will have studied Research Methodology for the History of Art as part of their undergraduate studies. Anyway a basic knowledge of this disciplinary area and a general reference basis will be provided.
Traditional art-historical knowledge with regard to the ‘Spectatorial Turn’;
chronicle of visual civilisation from the 19th to the 20th century;
criteria and approaches in Visual Studies;
Pictorial and Iconic Turn;
things, words, forms, and images; problems of representation;
the semiotics of the visual act;
artistic practice in the context of culture with particular reference to the research of Yuri Lotman;
art and temporality; visual narrativity;
art history and Information and Communication Technologies;
art history and curatorship

A written exam lasting two hours with four open-ended questions, one of which on the essay chosen by the student; the first session only will involve a specific written test intended for attending students.
One incomplete answer will result in a fail grade.
The use of books, notes and electronic media is not allowed during the test.
Non-attending students may sit the exam based on the listed bibliography.
Lectures and possibility of seminar exercises depending on number of students attending.
All of the lecture slides will be available on the Moodle platform.
Possibility of lectures by guest lecturers (from Italy and abroad) as well as visits to selected temporary exhibitions.
