The course is part of the related and supplementary courses of the master's degree course in “HOSPITALITY”. Awareness of historical practice and theories on Museums and their restoration contribute to the improvement of the transversal skills of the learners in the management and curatorial fields for Hospitality.

-Awareness of the main theoretical issues concerning the discipline of Museology;
-improvement of a critical approach to primary and secondary sources about Museums;
-improvement of a critical approach to Museums and their display;
-a critical approach to the contemporary world;
-ability to do research and to communicate results.
A basic knowledge in History of Western Art would be a plus.
WEEK 1
SOME INSIGHTS OF THEORY

WEEK 1 (7-8-9 November) – for a THEORY OF MUSEUM
• Oxford Dictionary: a [common] DEFINITION of MUSEUM
• THE ICOM: The SCIENTIFIC definition of MUSEUM: PRAGUE 2022
• TRAVELLING WITH THE MUSES: A Time-line for a History in collecting.

WEEK 2-4 types of Museums in VENICE theory and visits

WEEK 2
1. 14-15-16 Nov. “our National Gallery in Venice”: The National Heritage, History of Art and the chronological display. Introduction/visit/shared analysis.

WEEK 3
2. 21-22-23 Nov. “from Private to Public /display public and private: “the Palazzo Grimani” and the exhibitions: Domus Grimani /Archinto. Introduction/visit/shared analysis.

WEEK4
3. 28-29-30 Nov. On exhibitions Venues: “the dialogue between past and present: Liturgical spaces and Display of contemporary Art (Isola di San Giorgio): “Memento mori” by AI WEIWEI (Art as a civil commitment). Introduction/visit/shared analysis.

WEEK 5 - A MUSEOLOGY_LAB
12-13-14 December
Case studies (in groups of students): sharing of Knowledge and experience at lesson.
To prepare the exam: Essays and Didactic tools uploaded on moodle.
Assessment methods via ORAL EXAM:
Modality of the exam: the candidate is required to answer three questions on three topics of the program, each answer is assigned a score from 0 to 10, the final grade is the sum of the three scores. Participation in group work gives the right to an increase in the final grade of 20% or the distinction (lode);
final score comes from the sum of three components, which are:
1. active participation in lessons;
2. the evaluation of a seminar presentation in the classroom;
3. the evaluation of the oral exam.

1. Active participation in the lessons is:
• the demonstration of an intellectual curiosity with regard to the discipline and the topics covered;
• participation in the debate requested by the teacher.

2. The evaluation of the seminar presentation in the classroom (as an individual or in working groups based on the number of students enrolled in the course), will take into account:
• Originality of the proposed theme and its treatment;
• Use of bibliographical, documentary and digital resources sources;
• Effectiveness of the exhibition through the use of presentation tools.

3. The final oral exam is aimed at verifying:
• The acquisition of disciplinary content;
• Mastery of a specific lexicon;
• The ability to argue and critically rework content;
• The maturation of an overall vision of the discipline.
