Part of the core teaching in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management, the course is designed for students enrolled in the curricula "Art History" and "Archaeology". As a rule, the students enrolled in the curricula “Performative Arts” and “ Arts Management” cannot be admitted in this course: another one, with different program, is dedicated to them.

This teaching unit offers 6 credits and is the first part of a 12-credit course, together with "FUNDAMENTALS OF CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE, IIa" (FT0451-1 Prof. Monaco). The final score will be the average of the evaluation scored in the first and in the second part of the course. For organisational reasons, it is preferable to take the examination for this part of the course AFTER the examination for its first part. Further information about the registering and publication of the partial and final score will be provided in the "Notices" of the instructor's institutinal web pages and during the first class.

Starting from the academic year 2021-22, this second teaching unit focuses on the history of art techniques, instead of the history and theory of conservation.
- Knowledge and understanding of the main techniques of non digital art (painting included), its materials and processes.

- Understanding of the most common conservation problems raised by the art media discussed.

- Ability to use the vocabulary of art techniques properly.

- Ability to describe the making process of artifacts and highlight its significance with respect to several disciplines.
The course is addressed to second-year students and gives for granted the notions that can be acquired in the first-year courses.
For organisational reasons, it is preferable to take the examination for this part of the course AFTER the examination for its first part.
The course offers a survey on the art materials and techniques preferred for painting, sculpting and object making in the period spanning from the Antiquity to the twentiteth century. It will discuss significant examples of the relation between media and forms of use, art materials and geographical/environmental factors, technical options and formal preferences.
Compulsory readings (provisional)

- Corrado Maltese (ed.), Le tecniche artistiche, Mursia, Milano 1983, or other editions (BAUM LIBRITESTO DEP 09301) (selection)
The final exam (a quiz lasting 90-120 minutes) consists of open-answer and closed-answer questions (closed-book form). They assess the students' understanding of the topics discussed in class and considered in the assigned readings. Plagiarism implies the immediate invalidation of the proof. Exchange of information with others is not allowed during the proof.

The final note is based 100% on the answers to the online quiz. The score corresponding to each question will be indicated in the quiz.

The quiz can either be online (moodle quiz) or in presence, depending on the prescriptions that Ca' Foscari University of Venice updates before the start of each term. The final form adopted for the quiz will be communicated during the first class.
Frontal teaching and additional materials made available on moodle (http://moodle.unive.it ).

The development of the university, regional and governmental pandemic policies may cause changes in the teaching and assessment methods on short notice, independently from the teacher’s will. Up-to-date information will be provided during the first class of the course.

Moodle’s blackboard is the official channel for every announcement concerning the organization of the course. All the participants are requested to sign in the moodle course.
