ENGLISH FOR ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS (EXAM)

In line with the general objectives of the undergraduate program, this course is aimed at providing students with linguistic means and strategies which could enable them to interact in English both in private or public companies.
The course focuses on the language of Business, Economics, Trade and Finance. Language acquisition will be enhanced through the use of authentic materials in English, which will be used to develop students' reading, listening, speaking and grammar skills. The aim is to provide students with the tools and knowledge they need to understand the latest trends in the worlds of Economics and International Business. (Level requested to participate fully is B2 on the CEFR)

By the end of the course, students will have learnt how to:
- understand and use correctly specific language to describe economic and financial trends;
- speak about the latest developments in the digital economy;
- discuss relevant topics such as corporate culture, training, ethics, time management and change

Students MUST have passed the B1 computer test at the CLA before attempting Lingua Inglese esame. (Information concerning the B1 test is available on the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo website http://www.unive.it/cla ).

The course is divided in modules, organised as follows:

Module 1 - Business structure, Corporate organisation and procedure, business strategy and leadership, job hunting.
Module 2 - Marketing and advertising - Brand, International advertising and marketing
Module 3 - Cross-cultural communication in the workplace

The final exam includes a written + oral assignment.

The written exam for all candidates will be asked to answer open-ended and multiple-choice questions regarding the topics and notions that have been presented during the lessons. Same type of exam will be applied both to attending/non-attending students. It is strongly recommended that students attend the full course.

Tasks are divided as follows:
Listening comprehension
Reading comprehension
Multiple choice/Gap fill questions
Writing

If the student passes the written test with a score of 18/30 or higher, he/she will be admitted to the oral test.

The oral test involves creating a short powerpoint presentation on one of the topics set out in the guidelines published on Moodle and discussed in class.
Following this, the student will have to record a short video (5 to 6 minutes) in which he/she will discuss the topics of his/her presentation, following the guidelines provided.

The video must be uploaded to the appropriate Moodle section.
The teacher will provide an evaluation of the presentation considering the following parameters: Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Pronunciation, Grammar.

The final evaluation of the exam is based on the efficiency of the implemented methods, the completion and accuracy of the answers, and the clarity of the presentation of facts, thoughts and opinion. The final mark, expressed in thirtieths (with honours if deemed appropriate), is calculated based on the (rounded down) average of the marks of the written and oral exams.

Each face-to-face lesson will deal with a specific topic while considering particular linguistic features typical of financial institutions. The theoretical explanations will be accompanied by exercises and analyses to consolidate the content through interactive lessons with audio-visual materials.
