This course will attempt to familiarize students with present-day questions concerning the philosophy behind political and social movements (for example, Aristotle’s political theory and modern-day questions), ethics, issues of culture and identity, and others, time and preference permitting.
The pedagogical goals of the course consist in improving students' ability to read, write about, and orally present philosophical topics in English.
Minimum level: B2 CEFR as specified in the university regulations concerning admittance to the magistrale.
Study of texts and accompanying videos, free discussion, presentations and essay writing.
Material on Moodle.
The exam consists in two questions on the course material. Those students who have done an oral presentation during the course will have only one question.
Non-attending students: The program is identical but non-attending students are strongly encouraged to meet me for an office hour session (“ricevimento”), either online or in presence, to allow for a proper followup of their work.
It is obligatory to have handed in one essay during the course.
Students are to prepare each text before coming to class in order to facilitate direct discussion and debate. Oral participation is free and encouraged. Oral presentations will be organized, either individually or in groups. The material will be analyzed and discussed in class, and will provide the basis for the elaboration of an essay.
English
The course being one of language, attendance is strongly encouraged. Class is held in "dual" mode, meaning both in presence and online via Zoom, but the latter is reserved for those students who cannot attend due to distance (international students), work, and family obligations. Attendance on Zoom requires not just audio but also video so that the online students and in-class students might interact effectively. Class recordings for non-attending students will remain available via Panopto on Moodle for one week.
