The course Lingua Inglese 3 is part of the core curriculum subject area (attività formative di base) of the Degree in Language and Cultural Mediation and will enable students to acquire an excellent communicative competence of the English language by means of comparative text linguistics and discourse analysis methodologies. The course consists of a semestral module which will be completed by applied, practical language classes called "esercitazioni", which will be part of the final exam. The module will explore different text types of the English language from both a discoursive and a translation point of view and it will enable students to recognize and elaborate short texts in English as well as translating them from English into Italian. Special attention will be devoted to academic writing. Language competence will be developed at the C1 level of QCER.
At the end of the course students will be able to understand and produce oral and written texts belonging to different text types in English Language at a C1 level of QCER; they will also be able to recognize and describe the stylistic and discursive aspects of English and Italian in a contrastive perspective; they will be able to use the appropriate terminology of text linguistics as well as to describe the salient features and structures of various text types, especially those of academic texts. They will also be able to use the material provided by their teacher in an autonomous way and will be able to self-assess the skills and competences acquired during the course.
Pre-requisites of this course are a level B2 of the QCER and an excellent competence of the Italian language.
1. Contrastive analysis of various text types in English and in Italian.
2. Metalanguage and analytical tools for text analysis and pre-translation activities.
3. Stylistic and textual analysis of different text types according to a contrastive perspective.
4. Text writing and text-editing in English.
5. Translation of short texts from English into Italian,
The "esercitazioni" will focus on the grammar, stylistic and textual aspects of English at the level B2+/ C1 QCER

The final exam will consist of two parts, a written and an oral one, which will test the competence on the topics explored during the course. Students will be allowed 90 minutes to write a text analysis by means of the discourse analysis tools acquired during the course. Students will also be required to translate the analysed text from English into Italian. The oral test will assess the students' acquisition of the main theoretical concepts explored during the course as well as their communicative competence at the C1 level of the QCER . Students will be required to employ the acquired metalanguage to talk about their translation tasks. The topics explored in the "esercitazioni" will also be tested in the oral part of the exam. The two marks of the written and the oral part will be calculated for the final result of the exam.
