The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of medieval and modern art history and methodology and it is included among the electives of the Related and Integrative Activities of the Degree Course in Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage and Activities (History of Art pathway). In particular, topics relating to medieval goldsmithing, medieval and modern architecture, collections/collections and techniques will be addressed. As part of the knowledge of methodological issues and the main tools for analysing works of art, the course will specifically address the problem of the critical reading and use of sources; it will analyse works and contexts in the light of documents.

With regard to the ability to apply knowledge and understanding, the course will offer examples of the use of sources in a research perspective, preparing students to organise and pursue a study and research project on art-historical cultural heritage.
To know the main types of sources for art-historical research.

To know collections, archives, editions of sources useful for research.

To understand and evaluate the use of sources in specific literature; to acquire methodologies of approach and autonomy in their use.

To acquire communication skills: presentation of the contents of the sources; interpretative problems; analysis of artistic products in the light of the sources.
The course should preferably be taken in the third year and it is desirable to have taken (or attended) at least the first module of Medieval Art History and/or History of Modern Art. After a general methodological introduction, concrete cases will be dealt with, starting with the reading of published sources that will allow a journey through medieval and modern art, studying goldsmithery, liturgical furnishings, Venetian architecture and photography. Methodological topics will also be addressed: the tools of art historians, collections and collecting, protomuseums, liturgical furnishings.
The topics will be as follows:
1) TREASURES and ECCLESIASTIC FURNITURE.
