Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
This course is one of the core training activities of Master's Degree Programme in Sustainable Chemistry and Technologies – Biomolecular Chemistry curriculum, and enables students to acquire advanced knowledge of Inorganic Chemistry, with a focus on structure, reactivity, magnetism and spectroscopic properties of transition metal compounds.
The instructional goals are:
1) learning the theories which explain the chemical bonding and the orbital arrangement in transition metal compounds;
2) learning the reactivity of transition metal compounds;
3) learning the spectroscopic and magnetic properties of transition metal compounds.
Expected learning outcomes
1. Knowledge and understanding
i) Know the influence of ligands on the electronic properties of transition metal centres;
ii) Understand the structure, the magnetic and the spectroscopic properties of transition metal compounds as a function of the electronic structure of the metal centres;
iii) Know the reactivity of transition metal compounds.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
i) Ability to evaluate the physico-chemical properties of transition metal compounds on the basis of the acquired knowledge.
3. Critiquing skills
i) Ability to predict the physico-chemical properties of transition metal compounds on the basis of the acquired knowledge.

i) Ability to communicate the acquired knowledge using appropriate terminology;
ii) Ability to interact with teachers in a respectful and constructive manner.

The method of learning assessment consists of an oral examination, which lasts about 45 minutes and consists of a series of questions (3-5) on various aspects of the topics described in the "Contents" section.
