This course is one of the core training activities of Master's Degree Programme in Sustainable Chemistry and Technologies – Biomolecular Chemistry curriculum, and enables students to understand photosynthesis at the molecular level.

The instructional goals are:
1) learning the mechanism of bacterial and plant photosynthesis;
2) learning the structure and the functions of Photosystem I and II;
3) learning energy and electron transfer processes involved in photosynthesis.
1. Knowledge and understanding
i) Know the mechanisms underlying photosynthesis;
ii) Know the structure and the functions of Photosystem I and II.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
i) Ability to evaluate the functions of the components of photosystems;
ii) Understand electron and energy transfer processes in photosynthesis.

3. Critiquing skills
i) Ability to evaluate the structure-property relationships in photosynthetic systems.
4. Communication skills
i) Ability to communicate the acquired knowledge using appropriate terminology;
ii) Ability to interact with teachers in a respectful and constructive manner;
iii) Ability to interact in the context of group work.

5. Learning skills
i) Proficiency of the subject matter of the course;

The laboratory part will deal with:
1) the synthesis of Ni(OAc)2(H2O)2(phen);
2) the quenching of the luminescence of Ru(bpy)32+ with Cu2+;
3) the formation of the anthracene/N.N-dimethylaniline exciplex;
4) the configurations of [Ni(cyclam)]2+ in aqueous solution.

The method of learning assessment consists of an oral examination, jointly with Module 1. The oral examination lasts about 30 minutes and consists of a series of questions (3-5) on various aspects of the topics described in the "Contents" section.
The course is organised in lectures (30 hours) and laboratory experiences (18 hours). Attendance of at least 80% of the laboratory activities is mandatory.
