ITALIAN LITERATURE - 1

The course takes part of the core educational activities of the Master's Degree programme in Italian Philology and Literature, as the first part of two (ECTS course 6, total ECTS 12). It takes part too of intersciplinary related or additional studies of the Bachelor’s Degree programme in History (code FM0347) and in Philosophy (code FM0347).

The course aims to contribute to giving in-depth and extensive knowledge in the field of Italian literature, through the study of a fundamental text for the Italian poetry of the twentieth century, as well as for the entire poetic production of Montale, such as "La bufera e altro". At the end of the course the student must be able to explain punctually, also through paraphrases, the texts studied in class, recognize the main formal and content characteristics, relate them to other texts of previous and contemporary Italian and foreign literature.

The general knowledge of Italian literary history from the end of the nineteenth century to the whole twentieth century is presupposed.
A good knowledge of the Italian poetic language, especially modern, is necessary.

Course title: "'La bufera e altro' by Eugenio Montale" (part one).
Biography of Montale. Historical-critical and structural analysis of "La bufera e altro". Reading and commentary of the individual lyrics that make up the book, with particular reference to the linguistic, syntactical, lexical, rhetorical and intertextual uses.

Oral exam.
The exam will start with the reading of a text, or a part of the text, among those presented in class, of which the student will be asked for a timely explanation with comment. It will then continue with questions related to the course and the bibliography in the program.
The student must demonstrate that he has studied and assimilated the contents of the course and possesses personal critical skills.

The course will consist on lectures, with the help of multimedia tools.
