The course offers an introduction and a first knowledge of some of the classic texts and debates among mostly European historians between the 19th and the 20th century
The expected results are based especially on the familiarization by the students of some of the major theoretical, methodological and historiographical contribution of European, Anglo-American (and some extra European) historiography from the XIX and the XX centuries
There are no specific prerequirements to attend the course and take the final test
Historians and historical method: from Historicism to Global History
The course will examine, both through lectures and through common discussions of texts, some of the major methodological contributions of European historiography from the XIX and the XX centuries (with some references to historians of Antiquity).

- Sergio Luzzato (a cura di), Prima lezione di metodo storico, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2011.

Students not attending lectures ("non frequentanti") should add the following two texts:

- Francesco Benigno, Parole nel tempo. Un lessico per pensare la storia, Viella, Roma 2013
- Peter Burke, Una rivoluzione storiografica. La scuola delle "Annales", Laterza, Roma-Bari 2002

For students attending the course (frequentanti) there will be a final paper (10 pp., with footnotes) and the discussion of the volumes of the general bibliography (parte generale)
For students not attending the course ("non frequentanti") there will be an individual discussion on the bibliography for not attending students.
