The course "German language 1" aims at introducing the German language at a bachelor level. This main objective will be reached through two specific objectives. The first is the acquisition of the communicative-linguistic competences in German as a foreign language (DaF) corresponding to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The second is the acquisition of specific theoretical knowledge on the structure of the German language through the formal analysis of its phonetics, phonology and morphology in comparison to those of Italian.
Knowledge and comprehension:
sociolinguistic overview of the German language; knowledge of the phonetic / phonological key aspects of German; knowledge of the key aspects of the morphology of German (structure of words, morphological processes); knowledge and comprehension of grammatical and lexical elements needed for communication in German at a B1+/B2 level.

Applied knowledge and comprehension:
capability of correctly transcribing German words through the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), correctly analyse the syllabic and morphological structure of words; metalinguistic analysis on phonetic, phonologic and morphological aspects of German and Italian; proper use of the linguistic terminology. Capability of understand an academic lesson in German. Capability of understand and produce short texts, and, generally, to produce at a B1+ level and to comprehend at a B2 level.

Autonomy of judgement:
Apply the practical and theoretical competences to new words and contexts; capability of judging the correctness of alternative and of motivating in favor of a choice. Capability of judging the correctness of grammar in oral and written texts at a B1+ / B2 level.

Communicative abilities:
receptive abilities at a B2 level, i.e. capability of understanding a lesson of linguistics. Capability of understanding short articles and short texts. Productive abilities at B1+ level, i.e. being able of writing short texts on familiar and every-day topics. Capability of taking part to the (virtual) class.

Ability to learn:
Capability of actively participate in a university lesson and properly use the tools of the virtual class (Moodle). Capability of properly using bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, and resources available on the Internet.
German at an intermediate school level (corresponding to a B1 level).
Dr. Cognola's course aims at discussing the sociolinguistic status of German, as well as its main phonetics, phonological and morphological characteristics. The first part of the course is devoted to the discussion of the difference between descriptive grammar and prescriptive grammar and to a sketchy description of the sociolinguistic situation of German (differences between regional varieties, dialects, standard language). The course's second part deals with the inventory of sounds of the German (vocalism and consonantism), the main phonological rules, the phonetic transcriptions of German words according to the conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the relationship between spelling and pronunciation. The third part of the course will address the morphological structure of German, specifically the classification of morphemes (by position and function), the description of the main morphological processes (flexion, composition, derivation, conversion).
The linguistic topics will always be presented in a contrastive German-Italian key to start a metalinguistic reflection which is key to acquire the formal characteristics of the German language.


The DaF courses offered by CEL (three parallel groups E1A, E1B, E1C in the I and II semester) are aimed at developing written and oral, receptive, productive and interactive skills at level B1 + / B2. During the DaF courses, practical activities, such as reading / listening, discussion, written productions, also aimed at the acquisition and consolidation of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

Specialized tutoring (offered by advanced students or doctoral students) will offer specific support for IPA transcriptions and division of words into morphemes; support for the revision of grammar topics (also with the performance of exam simulations); exercises of written production (narrative text), also in small groups.

Text 1.
The teaching module aims to verify the acquisition of theoretical-formal knowledge in the field of phonetics, phonology and morphology of the German language and of the sociolinguistic situation of German. The exam consists of 3 exercises: phonetic transcription and syllable division of some German words; analysis in morphemes of some German words and of 2 short questions with closed stimulus with open answer. The following elements are considered in the evaluation of the exams:
a) adequacy in the answers and in the solution of the exercises in relation to the skills required to have acquired the students at the end of the course; b) completeness in the answers and requests in which the exercises are articulated in relation to the skills that students are required to have acquired at the end of the course; c) ability to articulate the answers to open-ended questions in a logical and clear way; d) mastery of the specialized language of linguistics. To pass the exam it is necessary to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, students must demonstrate that they have acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to articulate the answers to the open-ended questions in a logical, clear, complete way (also with pertinent comparisons with Italian) and with the use of correct linguistic terminology.
Test duration: 60 minutes, without vocabulary.

Test 2: grammar test (filling and transformation exercises), 45 minutes.
Test 3: written comprehension of a journalistic (or similar) text with open questions, 30 min; with monolingual dictionary.
Test 4: written expression (drafting of a short narrative text of at least 150 words starting from a photo and some pre-established words), 90 min .; with monolingual dictionary.
Test 5: oral expression (short presentation or interaction on a topic addressed during the exercises, or chosen by the student), approx. 5 min .; without note.

PROVE IN ITINERE:
Students regularly attending classes will be offered the opportunity to take the tests to verify the achievement of level B1 + (written and oral production) and grammar in itinere, during the CEL classes.
Test 2: during the second semester; to access it, the student must have participated at the end of the first semester in a simulation (with correction, without grade).
Test 4: at the end of the second semester: to access it, the student must have participated in two simulations.
Test 5: during the second semester, on dates and times to be agreed with the CEL.

Tests 1 and 3 are offered ONLY during regular sessions, while tests 2, 4, 5 can only be written during the regular Appelli.

Test 1 is specific to class 2 (prof. Cognola), while tests 2-5 are common to both classes.
The results of the individual exams (in itinere or during the sessions) remain valid for the other sessions of the same academic year. As long as all the parts are not passed, the student must re-enroll for the exam in order to take the missing part.
If the student does not pass all the exam tests by the January session, the results achieved up to that time will be canceled.
In the calculation of the overall mark of German language 1, the individual tests enter with the following weights: test 1 = 60%, test 2 = 10%, test 3 = 10%, test 4 = 20%, test 5 = 0% (fail/pass).
