This course is designed for engineering physics students and runs in the first semester. The course aims at giving students the fundamental insight into nanotechnology and nanomaterials, describing the various facets of the theme: structural and functional properties derived from nano-dimensions (0D, 1D, and 2D), integration of nanostructures into devices and their operating principles. Specific examples will be given about application of nanostructures in operating devices.

The students will learn the fundamental principles of nanoscience and technology. In starts from introducing the basic concept of science at nanoscale, discussing the special properties related to shape and size. Quantum confinement and associated electronic structure will be discussed to draw a baseline on the initiation of the concepts in nanoscience and technology. The synthesis of nano-sized materials (both bottom-up and top-down approaches) will be elaborated with specific examples mentioning the advantages and disadvantages therein. Moreover, the integration of nanomaterials into devices will also be discussed.
The student will be trained in identifying specific applications, in which nanotechnology can offer improved functionalities, compared to conventional materials. They will also be instructed on the processes and phenomena, which make the nanomaterials successful in terms of performance of the final device.
The students will be able to identify which strategy to follow to synthesize the desired nanostructured material for specific applications pertinent to their field of interest.
The basic knowledge of basic knowledge of solid state physics, material science, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry are the prerequisite to attend the course
Growth methods: Top-down vs Bottom-up,
Liquid phase epitaxy, Vapor phase epitaxy, Vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and vapor-solid (VS) condensation. Nucleation and growth methods: island model (Volmer-Weber), layer model (Frank-van de Merwe), layer-island model (Stranski-Krastanov), lase ablation, sputtering, Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor transport (PVT), metal organic Chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), Hydrothermal method,

The students will submit assignments, do group presentations and eventually undergo oral examination at the end of the course.

The course will be conducted in the class rooms. Students class activity is highly encouraged. At least 80% of attendance is required to pass the course.
