The target of this short-time lab course is to offer to the students the chance to get used to basic lab hardware and handling practice in safety conditions, anyway performing some useful experiments in connection with theory and/or general chemical knowledge.
The instructional goals are therefore:
1) learning how to correctly perform the most common operations in the chemical lab (handling of reagents, use of glassware, preparation of solutions, etc.);
2) applying the knowledge of General and Inorganic Chemistry at a practical level;
3) conducting scientific experiments in groups;
4) applying the scientific method to problem solving;
5) writing a laboratory activity notebook;
5) writing reports of laboratory activities.
1. Knowledge and understanding
i) Know chemical laboratory practice.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
i) Apply correctly the basic techniques used in the chemical laboratory for conducting scientific experiments;
ii) Ability to use chemical laws and concepts to solve practical problems according to the scientific method;
iii) Write a report of laboratory activities.
3. Critiquing skills
i) Ability to evaluate the logical consistency of results obtained experimentally with the application of the laws and theoretical concepts previously learnt.
4. Communication skills
i) Ability to communicate the acquired knowledge and the result of its application using appropriate terminology and methods, both orally and in writing;
ii) Ability to interact with teachers, technical staff and colleagues in a respectful and constructive manner;
iii) Ability to interact in the context of group work.
5. Learning skills
i) Ability to be autonomous in collecting experimental data;
ii) Ability to take notes, selecting and collecting information according to its importance and priority, and to share them with one's colleagues.
Having attended the lessons presenting the lab exercises
Synthesis of some salts: copper sulphate, ammonium iron(II) sulphate, zinc sulphate.
Preparation of potassium alum from scrap aluminum (example of environmental sustainability).
Acid/base titrations using pHmeter and indicators, and determination of pKa for a weak acid (HAc) by titration.
Building up of zinc/copper (Daniell) cell and other electrochemical cells: electromotive force measuraments.
Handouts of laboratory downlodable "via" Moodle.
Laboratory experiences reports with in-depth discussion of the results obtained during the oral exam.
The course is organised in laboratory experiences.
Attendance of at least 80% of the laboratory activities is mandatory.
The teaching material concerning the laboratory experiences can be found and downloaded from the course Moodle page.
Evaluation of lab reports will contribute to the final global evaluation of the course.
The student must attend at least 80% of lab sessions to be admitted to final examination.
