The teaching intends to explore some basic themes of human geography, useful and relevant to the needs of the course of Conservazione e Gestione dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali.
At the end of the lecture, in addition to the basic elements of physical geography related to anthropic activities, students will be able to manage the main concepts of human geography, corresponding to key issues of international politics and the life of societies on the planet. Particular emphasis will be given to the link, in its history, between man and the territory where he lives, to the spatial location of anthropic activities, with special attention to rather relevant aspects: the built environment of the cities and the landscape reading.
Familiarization with cartography will be required, so that the aims of the lecture are combined with the reading of the cartographic tool, essential for interpreting and representing the territory, on which the student will then work in the future profession.
General knowledge of the characteristics of terrestrial space and cartography.
The course will cover three areas:
a) Basic conceptual elements of geography.
b) Cartographic reading exercises (materials provided by the teacher), carried out and evaluated in the classroom, with the teacher's guidance.
c) The phenomenon of the nodal port and financial hubs of Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong-Macau, Manila, Dubai, etc.): the impact of man on the environment, the conservation and reconstruction of urban buildings, commercial traffic flows and geopolitical placement. Some of these metropolises today have taken on the mercantile, industrial and commercial function that Venice had in its glorious past. In the light of their history, these significant cases will be examined, where even the related urban centers are constantly changing, in balance between conservation and change, sometimes presenting an unsustainability with the environment surroundings (e.g. Dubai). A hint will also be given on the maritime policies of the States in the Asian area. This sector of the course will be carried out using materials provided by the teacher, representing the monographic part and application of general theoretical concepts.
Attending students:

2) DE VECCHIS G. – BORIA E., Manuale di geografia, Carocci, Roma 2022. Selected chapters, which will be indicated by the teacher in class.

Attending students: short final oral interview. The verification of the cartographic reading will be understood as accomplished through classroom exercises. In general, active participation in the classroom will be equally valued. At each lesson, the relevant corresponding topic will be indicated in the textbooks provided.

Non-attending students: oral exam on the three texts indicated (complete). During the interview, the reading of elements of cartography will also be required (before taking the exam students have the responsibility of requesting the cartography from the teacher).

Attending students are considered anyone who has attended at least 22 hours of lessons out of 30. Attendance at the cartography exercises and monographic segment is considered compulsory for all attending students. Attendance will be recorded and upon enrollment on the course, students are expected to declare their willingness or otherwise to attend.
Since the teaching is problematic and interactive in nature, participatory discussion in the classroom will be preferred on the problems of geography as they are posed. The lessons will be accompanied by video and photographic material.
Office hours are held on-line on Fridays from 3 to 6 pm, or by appointment, by prior arrangement with the teacher (please write to giulio.cargnello@unive.it ).
