This course is one of the training activities of the PhD program in Science and Technology of Bio and Nanomaterials, and provides the students with a general overview of the application of nanomaterials for environmental and biomedical purposes, with a focus on the current state-of-the-art literature.
At the end of the course, the students are able to critically analyse the literature on nanomaterials for environmental and biomedical applications and to understand the relevant current challenges. Moreover, the students are able to understand the positive and negative impacts of nanomaterials on the environment and on human health.
Background of Chemistry, Physics, and Materials Science at Master’s level.
Part I (15 hours): Environmental applications

• Water remediation
• Nanoadsorbents
• Advanced oxidation processes for water treatment
• Photocatalysis
• Nanomaterials for agriculture
• Nanopollution
• Air remediation

Part II (15 hours): Biomedical applications

• Nanotoxicity
• Drug delivery with nanomaterials
• Bioimaging with nanomaterials
• Nanobiosensors
Lecturer's slide presentations and references therein.
The final exam consists in an oral presentation on a specific topic agreed with the lecturer. The ability of critical analysis and the presentation skills together with the use of an appropriate scientific language will be evaluated.
The course is organised in lectures. The teaching material can be found and downloaded from the course Moodle page.
