The course aims to introduce attending students to the topical moments in the history of modern and contemporary music.
The student will acquire basic notions on the history of modern and contemporary music, both formal and historical; the composers and their works will be placed in the artistic context of the time.
The student is informed about the main events of the XVII-XX centuries, through the chronologies that will be found on the course page. For the general arrangement see The Cambridge History of Nineteenth-Century Music, ed. by Jim Samson, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2001 («The Cambridge History of Music»), passim.
Alban Berg.

In the context of the so-called 'Second Vienna School', where Anton Webern, the other pupil of Arnold Schönberg, embodied avant-garde rigor, Alban Berg was the composer most gifted with a lyrical vein, profuse largely in his vocal and instrumental works , so much so that it earned the nickname 'Puccini of dodecaphony'. In this course we will study life and works, with targeted listening, and the social and artistic context in which a musical experimentation with extraordinary results arose and flourished.
For the historical framework, the candidate may consult the.Storia della musica di Mario Baroni Enrico Fubini Paolo Petazzi Piero Santi Gianfranco Vinay, Torino, Einaudi, 1988: L’epoca delle avanguardie storiche, pp. 416-482.
